The novel The Godfather is written about the Italian Mafia's influence on New York during the 1930's-1960's time period. It is the story of one crime family in particular The Corleones. This great tale of the Corleones rein is a realistic fiction novel written by Mario Puzo. The story itself takes place in New York where the Five Families run just about everything from who fishes in the ocean to what clothes you are available to you at the store. The Corleones at the time are the most powerful family controlling a lot of policeman and politicians. It all starts when a turk named Sollozzo comes around and tries to get legal protection from the Corleones for his new narcotics operation. Sollozzo's already got the Tattaglias behind them and secretly the most powerful family as brute force goes, the Barzinis. But the Greatest man alive Don Vito Corleone politely declines Sollozzos offer and tells him that they should have no problems because their businesses do not interfere with eachother. Well this leads to a the Don being shot down in the street. He's hit 5 times in the back but he lives on to settle the mob war that soon uprises.

It's an all out war the remaining families versus the Corleones. The Don goes through a series of misfortunes, his eldest son is gun down, his second son had been sent away from home with fear that he may be harmed and his youngest son Michael Corleone spends three years hiding out in Sicily after commiting the murders of Police Captain McCluskey and the Turk Sollozzo.

Months later when the Don is fully recovered he soon learns of his son's death and calls a meeting between the Five Families asking for peace. He not only invites the Five Families but every crime family across the country, but no one was sure if he was being sincere until he called in the peace makers the Bocchicchios. At the meeting he soon states that he will make no attempts at vengeance for his son, that he will not seek out the person that did it, and he will make sure that none of his subordinates do so. But if anything were to happen to his son Michael on his way back to the country from Sicily that he will not hold back that he would blame all.

Michael Corleone soon returns from Sicily, and joins his father in the family business. He begins learning the ropes on how to run the family. But he does not take long he catches on quick and soon he and his father begin making plans for the future of the family devising a way to get the Family back on top. Before long they put their plan into action, they decide to move the whole operation to Las Vegas they believe that’s where the future of the Family. They start by some of the hotel casinos on the strip and have Freddo co-own one with Moe Green. Michael then sets out to buy Green’s part but is refused. As life goes on the Don eventually dies, and Michael assumes his position as the Don of the Family, though not everyone believes it is rightfully his. He gives his two capos permission to leave and start their own family while at the same time, Michael puts the last phase of his and the former Don’s plan into action. The heads of the Tattaglia and Barzini Families are assassinated and Moe Greene is shot to death in an alleyway. This frees up all the political power that once belonged to the Corleones, and so Michael gets them back. This has officially made all accept him as the Don and puts the Corleones  back on top. Michael continues to steadily move the Family’s operation to Las Vegas while taking care of any loose ends.

I would recommend this book to those who are interested in the Mafia or just like a good suspension novel. This book contains twist and turns and the betrayers turn out to be those you never expected. This novel is an accurate fictional account of what a real crime family could be like. I really loved the story though in general though I did hate how the author made Tom Hagen loses his position of Consigliori. I also hated how Don Vito Corleone ended up dying because after that the story really went downhill. I believe that my novel is a classic because it provides in accurate account of what it was like to have the Mafia influence around in the world even during the time it was written, so in that way it’s timely.  Also the book is timeless because it was first published in 1969, and 42 years later it is still flying off the shelves it holds the record for the most sold copies, it’s a story people still talk about. And besides that it has a theme that touches every culture throughout life, being loyal to your friends and family. In this story loyalty is everything, and having friends is the greatest power of all. Those with friends are always going to be better off. And everyone has at least one friend. So overall this book is one of the best and I think everyone should read it.
